Is TEREA a cigarette? What a TEREA stick actually is, and what it costs in Dubai

TEREA is not a cigarette and not a vape — it is a tobacco stick that gets heated, never burned. Here is the difference, the UAE legal position, and what a carton costs.
The short answer: no, and the difference is fire
A cigarette works by burning. You put a flame to one end, the tobacco combusts at somewhere around 900°C, and what you inhale is smoke — the product of that combustion. A TEREA stick is never lit and never burns. It goes into an IQOS ILUMA device, which heats it from the inside to roughly 350°C, and what comes off is an aerosol rather than smoke. No flame, no ember, no ash, and nothing to stub out. That single difference is why the two are regulated, taxed, priced and named differently, and it is why nobody who sells these calls them cigarettes. If you have been searching "TEREA cigarette" you are not wrong to — it is the obvious phrase when the thing looks like a short cigarette and comes in a pack of twenty — but the product you are looking at is a heated tobacco stick. The other thing it is not is a vape. A vape heats flavoured liquid in a pod or tank and contains no tobacco leaf at all. A TEREA stick contains real compressed tobacco. Three separate categories: burned tobacco, heated tobacco, and liquid with no tobacco in it. TEREA is the middle one.
What is inside a TEREA stick
Open a pack and you get twenty short sticks, each about 45mm long — roughly half the length of a cigarette. Inside each one is a plug of reconstituted tobacco: real leaf that has been ground, mixed with glycerine and pressed into a dense sheet, then folded into the stick. Behind that sits a cooling section and a filter, which is why the mouth end looks familiar. The part that makes TEREA specifically a TEREA is a metal element buried in the tobacco plug itself. IQOS ILUMA devices contain no heating blade — they generate a magnetic field, and that field heats the metal inside the stick. Philip Morris calls the system SMARTCORE. The practical consequence for you is that there is no blade to snap and no chamber to scrape out, which was the single most irritating thing about the older generation of devices. It also means TEREA only works with ILUMA and ILUMA i. Drop a TEREA stick into an IQOS 3 DUO and nothing happens, because a blade device has no magnetic field to induct with. Those older devices take HEETS instead, and the two are not interchangeable in either direction.
Is IQOS legal in the UAE?
Yes. Heated tobacco products and the devices that use them have been legal to sell and use in the United Arab Emirates since 2019, when the country lifted the previous prohibition and brought them under formal product standards instead. They are sold only to adults aged 18 and over, they carry the same excise treatment as other tobacco products, and they must meet UAE specifications to be sold here. This is a question worth answering plainly because the old rule is still widely remembered and a lot of people arrive assuming the category is banned. It is not, and has not been for years. What has not changed is that this remains a tobacco product. It is not a smoking-cessation aid, it is not risk-free, and it is not for anyone who does not already use tobacco. Where you may use it is a separate matter from whether it is legal to own: indoor smoking rules in malls, offices, restaurants and airports apply to heated tobacco the same way they apply to cigarettes, and individual venues set their own policies on top of that. Check the venue, not the law.
What a TEREA "cigarette" costs in Dubai
TEREA is sold by the carton here, and a carton is 10 packs — 200 sticks — which is the same count as a carton of cigarettes. That makes the comparison easy. Our cheapest cartons are TEREA Indonesia and TEREA Tajikistan at AED 119, which is AED 11.90 a pack of twenty, or 59.5 fils per stick. TEREA Kyrgyzstan and TEREA Uzbekistan are AED 125. TEREA Kazakhstan — the version most people in the UAE mean when they just say TEREA — is AED 129, or AED 12.90 a pack. TEREA Italy is AED 169 and TEREA Japan is AED 199, the latter working out to 99.5 fils a stick, just under a dirham. The spread between the cheapest and dearest carton is AED 80. That is not a quality gap; it is a sourcing gap, and the Japanese carton is expensive because Japanese stock is genuinely hard to get, not because the stick is worth more. Delivery is a flat AED 30 anywhere in the UAE and free once your order passes AED 350. You pay cash on delivery, by card on delivery with 5% VAT added, or by bank transfer. Nothing is charged online and there is no deposit at any stage.
How to use one, step by step
You need two things: an ILUMA or ILUMA i device, and a pack of TEREA. Charge the device first. Take one stick and push it into the holder until it stops — there is no line to line up and no correct rotation, because there is no blade to slide alongside. Press and hold the button until the device vibrates and the light settles. Heating takes about twenty seconds on ILUMA i, and the device tells you when it is ready. Then simply draw on it as you would a cigarette. A session runs about six minutes or fourteen puffs, whichever comes first, and the device vibrates again when it is nearly done. When it ends, pull the used stick straight out and bin it. You do not tap ash, you do not stub anything, and you do not clean the chamber — the ILUMA generation removed that job entirely. Two mistakes are worth avoiding. Do not try to relight or reuse a spent stick; the tobacco is done and it will taste like it. And do not force a TEREA into an older blade device such as IQOS 3 DUO — it will not heat, and you can damage the blade trying.
Where to buy TEREA, and what to check before you pay
TEREA is sold in the UAE through licensed tobacco retail and through delivery shops like this one. The important part is not where you buy but what you check when it arrives, and this is worth being blunt about: a sealed carton is the only proof anyone can give you. When the driver hands it over, look at the shrink-wrap before you pay. It should be factory-tight, unbroken, and the authentication code on the pack should be intact and unscratched. If a shop is selling you single packs out of a split carton, that check is gone and you are relying on somebody's word instead. Devices are the exception and are sold individually, since nobody needs ten of those. You pay the driver after you have looked. Not before.
Which flavour to start with

TEREA, HEETS and vapes — one table's worth of difference
These three get confused constantly, so here is the whole distinction in one place. TEREA contains real tobacco, is heated by induction, and works only in IQOS ILUMA and ILUMA i devices. HEETS also contains real tobacco, but is heated by a physical blade and works only in the older IQOS 3 generation — it will not work in an ILUMA, and TEREA will not work in a blade device. A vape contains no tobacco at all: it heats a flavoured nicotine liquid held in a pod or tank, which is a different product category with different regulations, and it is not what we sell. If somebody offers you TEREA-compatible sticks that are not TEREA, be careful — third-party sticks for ILUMA devices exist and the induction element in them is not made to the same specification. The other frequent mix-up is the device family itself: ILUMA is the previous generation, ILUMA i is the current one, and both take the same TEREA sticks.
