There's no strength 1 in the tobacco line
Every TEREA flavour we stock carries a strength rating from 1 to 5 in our tasting notes, and the twelve plain tobacco sticks sit on the top four rungs of that scale. Nothing in the tobacco family scores a 1. That's worth knowing before you order, because someone stepping across from a light pack often expects the mildest heated stick to be genuinely faint, and it isn't — Yellow, the lightest of the twelve, is a 2. Read the number as taste intensity rather than anything measured in a lab: how much roast arrives on the first draw, how much body sits through the middle of the stick, how long the finish hangs around after you put it down. Twelve sticks across four rungs, and they group unevenly. Two at strength 2, three at 3, four at 4, three at 5. Within a rung, the order we give below runs from the softest character to the firmest, which is a judgement about taste and not a number Philip Morris publishes — the official rating is the same for everything in that band. One trait runs through the whole family and separates it from the Pearls and the Waves: there's no capsule to crush and no menthol, so puff one and puff fourteen taste the same. Nothing changes mid-stick. If you want to know exactly what a session will do before it starts, this is the family to stay in.
Strength 2 — Yellow, then Smooth Regular
Yellow is the entry point. It's light-cured leaf with a hay-like dryness and a sweetness so slight it only stops the stick tasting flat. The draw is smooth, the throat hit is gentle, and the room smell afterwards is the faintest of any tobacco stick we sell — which matters more than people expect if you're using the device inside a Marina apartment with family around. It's the flavour we suggest for the first carton a new ILUMA i owner buys, and it lives in the Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Italy cartons, so it's easy to get at almost any price point. Smooth Regular is Japan's answer to the same brief and it's built differently. A creamy top note sits over light tobacco, the throat hit is mild, and the finish fades fast and clean. It also registers a 1 on our cooling scale — not menthol, nothing close to it, just a soft lift on the exhale that Yellow doesn't have. Smooth Regular exists only in the TEREA Japan carton. Plenty of people keep it as a morning stick and move to something heavier by the afternoon, which is a sensible way to use a strength-2 flavour rather than treating it as a full-time choice.
Strength 3 — Silver, Balanced Regular, Regular
This rung is where most people who don't want to think about their flavour end up. Silver sits between Yellow and Amber with a faint herbal lift that reads almost fresh without being menthol — it's the second of the two tobacco sticks that score a 1 for cooling. Clean in, clean out, no lingering sweetness, which makes it easy to chain through a long working day. It's the office stick, popular in Business Bay and JLT, and it's the best palate reset we know if you've been living on fruit-menthol capsules for a month. Balanced Regular takes a different route to the same middle ground: a light cereal warmth over the tobacco base, a rounded exhale that never dries your mouth, and no single note leading. It's the easiest Japanese stick to smoke back to back, so it suits people who get flavour fatigue by the fourth stick of the day. Then there's Regular, the reference point for the whole TEREA family. Clean, evenly built, no peaks and no surprises. Japanese production runs a little finer than the Central-Asian versions, so at identical strength the draw feels smoother. All three are honest all-day sticks. Silver comes in five different cartons; Balanced Regular and Regular are Japan-only.
Strength 4 — Amber, Bronze, Russet, Golden Edition
The crowded rung, and the one where character starts to matter more than intensity. Amber is the stick most ex-smokers settle on: roasted rather than sweetened, warm and slightly nutty on the first draw, dry on the aftertaste instead of turning syrupy. It sells out fastest in our Deira and Bur Dubai drops and it's the safest carton to buy for someone else. Bronze pushes into the gap between Amber and Sienna — a warm roasted-nut base with a caramel edge, smoother than Sienna but with more body than Amber, so the session feels rounded start to finish. It's the natural move when Amber starts feeling thin. Russet is the European reading of a full tobacco stick. The roast is there, but a dried-fruit and warm-spice layer sits over it, closer to pipe tobacco than to a cigarette, with a long slightly sweet finish. It doesn't exist outside the TEREA Italy carton. Golden Edition is the limited-run blend in the Indonesian range: a fuller roast than Amber, honey woven through it, and a notably long finish with denser smoke that never turns harsh. Four sticks, one rating, four genuinely different experiences. If you already know Amber, this is the rung to explore sideways rather than upward.
Strength 5 — Sienna, Teak, Rich Regular
The ceiling. Sienna is the darkest roast in the classic range, with a cocoa-bitter edge behind the tobacco and a faint wood-smoke note on the exhale. It hits noticeably heavier in the throat than Amber, and sessions tend to run shorter because the flavour arrives immediately and stays dense to the last puff. It's the carton for anyone who's tried heated tobacco and complained it tasted thin. Teak goes savoury instead of dark. Toasted wood and a leathery depth that builds across the session rather than announcing itself on the first draw, dry and almost entirely free of sweetness — the most grown-up stick we carry, and Italy-only. Rich Regular is Japan's ceiling and the strongest non-menthol stick in our whole catalogue. It takes the Regular blend and concentrates it: thicker body, a dark-caramel sweetness that shows up mid-session, and a finish that lasts noticeably longer between puffs. None of these three are day-one flavours. If you're new to ILUMA and you start here, everything below will taste like nothing for a week, and you'll have spent a carton finding that out. Work up to them. Sienna is in six of our seven cartons, so it's the cheapest way onto this rung by a wide margin.
What actually changes when you move up a rung
Four things shift, and none of them is the thing people assume. First, how quickly flavour arrives: Yellow builds gently over the first few puffs, Sienna is fully present on puff one. Second, throat weight — the physical density of the draw, which is the difference most smokers notice first and the reason a strength-5 stick can feel like too much before you've even judged the taste. Third, sweetness, and this one runs backwards. The middle of the range carries the most sweetness (Golden Edition's honey, Bronze's caramel, Russet's dried fruit), while the top gets drier and more savoury — Teak has almost none at all. Fourth, room smell, which climbs steadily from Yellow up to Sienna and Teak. What doesn't change in a predictable way is nicotine. Our 1-to-5 number is a taste rating from our own tasting notes, not a nicotine measurement, and moving from a 3 to a 5 buys you intensity of flavour rather than anything else. Worth repeating too: only Silver and Smooth Regular carry any cooling at all, and both sit at 1 out of 5, which is a lift on the exhale rather than menthol. The other ten are flat zeroes. Where to stop: pick by the pack you used to buy
Match the ladder to your old habit and you'll usually land it first try. Light or blue pack, or you're deliberately stepping down? Stop at Yellow, or Smooth Regular if you've already bought the Japan carton for its menthols. Mid-strength pack, all-day smoker, no strong opinions about flavour? Stop at strength 3 — Silver if you want neutral, Regular if you want the standard TEREA taste, Balanced Regular if you go through a lot of sticks in a day. Full-flavour red pack, or you rolled your own? Amber is the closest heated equivalent, and most people who start there stay there. Heavy evening smoker who's been unimpressed by heated tobacco so far? Go straight to Sienna and skip the disappointment. Already comfortable at 4 and hunting for something with more personality? Russet and Golden Edition are the two worth a carton. And if you're using two or three sticks a day and want each one to count, Rich Regular is the premium ceiling — it's the reason a lot of people pay the Japan price at all. What each rung costs, and how it reaches your door
Where a flavour lives decides what it costs, and the spread is wide. Yellow, Silver, Amber and Sienna all appear in the TEREA Tajikistan carton at AED 119, which is the cheapest route onto four of the twelve. Golden Edition comes only from TEREA Indonesia, also AED 119, and Bronze sits in both the Indonesia and Tajikistan cartons at that same price. TEREA Kyrgyzstan and TEREA Uzbekistan are AED 125, TEREA Kazakhstan is AED 129, and all three carry the classic Yellow, Silver, Amber and Sienna set. Russet and Teak exist only in the TEREA Italy (Europe) carton at AED 169. Regular, Balanced Regular, Smooth Regular and Rich Regular are Japan-only at AED 199.
