TEREA vs HEETS in the UAE: why the two sticks are not interchangeable

TEREA needs ILUMA or ILUMA i induction. HEETS needs a blade device. Neither stick works in the other, and here is what to do if you own the wrong one.
The whole answer, in two sentences
TEREA sticks work only in IQOS ILUMA and ILUMA i devices. HEETS sticks work only in the older blade devices, the IQOS 3 DUO and its relatives. Neither stick works in the other machine, and there is no adapter, no setting, no firmware trick and no workaround that changes it. We get asked this several times a week, usually by someone who has just been handed a device by a relative, or who found half a carton in a drawer after a trip, so it deserves a proper page rather than a footnote. The two systems heat tobacco in genuinely different ways. A blade device pushes a hot ceramic blade into the stick. An ILUMA i has no blade at all and instead heats a small metal core that is sealed inside the TEREA stick itself. Because the heating method differs, the stick has to be built differently, and a stick built for one system is dead weight in the other. This is not a licensing decision or a regional lock. It is physical. One more thing before the detail: we sell TEREA cartons and ILUMA i devices, and we do not stock HEETS at all. So if this page reads like it is steering you towards one system, that is because it is the only system our stock works with, and it is also exactly why we would rather you check your device now than discover the mismatch while a driver is standing in your lobby waiting to be paid.
A ceramic blade and an induction coil are not the same machine
Picture the inside of an IQOS 3 DUO. There is a thin ceramic blade standing up in the middle of the chamber, and when you push a HEETS stick down, that blade slides into the tobacco plug at the base of the stick. The blade gets hot, the tobacco touching it gets hot, and the heat spreads outward from the middle. It is contact heating, and it has consequences you already know if you have lived with one: tobacco residue builds up on the blade, so you clean the chamber every twenty sticks or so with those little cotton sticks, and the blade itself is fragile enough that plenty of people have snapped one by twisting a stick on the way out. Now picture an ILUMA i. The chamber is a smooth empty tube. There is nothing standing up in the middle, nothing to pierce anything, nothing to clean. The heating element is not in the device at all. It is in the stick. Every TEREA stick has a small metal element called SMARTCORE sealed inside it, and the device wraps an induction coil around the chamber. Switch it on and the coil creates a magnetic field, the metal core inside the stick heats up in response, and the tobacco packed around that core warms from the inside. The device never touches the tobacco. That single design change is what removes the cleaning routine, and it is also what makes the two stick formats mutually useless.
Why a TEREA stick physically cannot work in an IQOS 3 DUO
Take a TEREA stick out of the pack and look at the end that would go into the device. It is closed. There is a solid base with the metal core sealed behind it, and no opening for anything to slide into. A HEETS stick, by contrast, presents an exposed tobacco plug for the blade to enter. So when someone tries to force a TEREA stick into a 3 DUO, what they are actually doing is pressing a brittle ceramic blade into a sealed metal-cored object, and the blade is the part that gives way. That is how most broken blades happen in this scenario, and a snapped blade is not something you fix at the kitchen table. But suppose the stick went in cleanly and nothing broke. It would still produce nothing. The blade would be heating the outside of a sealed core rather than loose tobacco, the device has no induction coil to activate the SMARTCORE, and the temperature profile a blade device runs was designed around a completely different stick construction. You would get a warm object and a burnt smell at best. There is no partial compatibility here, no it-sort-of-works-if-you-push-harder. If your device has a visible blade, a TEREA carton is not something to experiment with. Put the carton aside, sealed, and read the upgrade section below before you damage a device that still works perfectly well for what it was built for.
Why a HEETS stick will not heat in an ILUMA i
The other direction fails quietly, which somehow confuses people more. A HEETS stick will slide into an ILUMA i chamber. It fits. Nothing snaps, nothing jams, and for a moment it looks like it is going to work. Then the session runs and nothing happens, because there is nothing inside a HEETS stick for an induction field to grab. No metal core, no SMARTCORE, nothing to convert that field into heat. And since an ILUMA i has no blade, the tobacco is not being touched by a hot surface either. You end up drawing warm air through unheated tobacco, which tastes like nothing at all and wastes a stick. We have had customers message us convinced their new device is faulty, and the fix has been the same every time: the device is fine, the stick is the wrong format. It is worth saying plainly because the packaging does not make it obvious at a glance. HEETS packs and TEREA packs are similar sizes, some flavour names sound familiar across both families, and the two products sat side by side in duty-free displays for years. Familiar naming is not compatibility. If a friend hands you a spare pack at a majlis in Al Nahda and you own an ILUMA i, check the stick before you assume it will work, because the disappointment is guaranteed otherwise.
Ten seconds to identify what you actually own
Open the device and look into the stick chamber under a light. If you can see a thin blade standing up in the middle, you own a blade device and you need HEETS. If the chamber is a smooth empty tube with no blade, you own an ILUMA family device and you need TEREA. That check is faster and more reliable than trying to remember a model name, and it settles the question for a second-hand device that arrived without a box. If you would rather go by name: IQOS 2.4, IQOS 3, IQOS 3 DUO and IQOS MULTI are all blade devices. IQOS ILUMA, ILUMA ONE, ILUMA PRIME and the newer ILUMA i One, ILUMA i Standard and ILUMA i Prime are all induction devices. The sticks are just as easy to tell apart once you have seen both. A TEREA stick is short and its base is capped, so you cannot see loose tobacco at the end you insert. A HEETS stick looks much more like a miniature cigarette, with a visible tobacco plug at the tip. One more habit worth building: check the device before you place an order, not after it arrives. Everything on our side is pay on delivery, so nothing is charged online and you can inspect a sealed carton at the door, but no inspection at the door will tell you whether the sticks match the device sitting upstairs on your desk.
You own a blade device and a TEREA carton is already here
First, do not try to make it fit. You will lose the blade and still not get a session out of it. Second, the carton is fine where it is. TEREA arrives factory-sealed, a carton is 10 packs and 200 sticks, and unopened packs keep for a long time as long as you are sensible about storage. Sensible means a cupboard in an air-conditioned room. It does not mean a glovebox, a balcony shelf, or the boot of a car parked in the sun off Sheikh Zayed Road, all of which will dry the tobacco and flatten a menthol capsule within an afternoon. Pass the carton to someone who already runs an ILUMA or ILUMA i, which is how most of these situations resolve inside a family. Or move to the induction system yourself, which is the option most people take once they realise the blade device was going to need replacing eventually anyway. What you should not do is buy a second-hand adapter from a marketplace listing that claims to bridge the two formats. The cheapest correct upgrade is the ILUMA i One at AED 179
If you need to move from a blade device to something that will actually heat a TEREA stick, the ILUMA i One at AED 179 is the least you can spend with us and still be on the right system. It is one piece, no separate holder to leave in a jacket pocket, and around twenty uses per charge, which suits people who charge overnight anyway. The ILUMA i Standard at AED 289 splits into a pocket charger and a touchscreen holder, and adds Pause Mode and FlexPuff so a session can be stopped and picked up again. The ILUMA i Prime at AED 399 runs the same electronics as the Standard inside an aluminium body with a fabric-wrapped door, so you are paying for materials rather than performance. All three heat TEREA identically. Worth doing the delivery arithmetic before you confirm: delivery is a flat AED 30 and becomes free once your subtotal reaches AED 350. The ILUMA i One at 179 plus a TEREA Japan carton at 199 comes to 378 and ships free, while 179 plus a TEREA Italy carton at 169 lands at 348 and misses the threshold by two dirhams. The ILUMA i Standard at 289 clears it with any carton beside it. The ILUMA i Prime at 399 clears it on its own. A device and a carton travel together in the same delivery, so a working setup can land in one visit.
What changes after you switch, and how to order
The day-to-day difference is smaller than people expect and better than they expect. No cleaning sticks, because nothing in the device touches tobacco. No blade to snap on the way out. No residue smell in the chamber after a heavy week. Flavour stays more consistent from the first draw to the last because the heat starts in the middle of the stick rather than working inward from a hot edge.
